VetScan VSpro Fibrinogen Test Operation is an Easy Four-Step Process

Seconds of hands-on time is all that is needed for performing fibrinogen measurements using the VetScan VSpro.

1. Collect the blood sample.
2. Spin down to plasma.
3. Dilute plasma in pre-filled vial.
4. Add sample to Fibrinogen test cartridge.

1. What is Fibrinogen Testing?

   Fibrinogen is an important parameter within the coagulation cascade that is commonly tested and evaluated as a marker of inflammation in many species, primarily equine and large animals. Inflammation can be caused by a number of reasons from both external and internal causes. Fibrinogen testing is used both to assist with diagnosis of inflammation and to help determine the prognosis of the patient. Also, serial testing is often performed to monitor the patient's recovery, progress and response to treatment.

   a.The VetScan Fibrinogen Test Cartridge is a turbidity based assay within a small plastic device consisting of a sophisticated micro-fluidic system that incorporates the infrastructure, reagents and a self-contained process for a test to proceed. Each cartridge contains optical detection windows for light absorbance to be measured from the reaction of plasma, diluent and thrombin.

5. What sample type is used for the Fibrinogen Test?

   Platelet poor plasma from a sodium citrate, blue top, tube (containing 3.2% or 3.8% sodium citrate), filled to the indicated fill line and mixed well.

6. How long is a citrated whole blood sample stable for fibrinogen testing?

   Providing flexibility to large animal practitioners, whole blood samples in sodium citrate tubes are stable for 24 hours in room temperature before it must be spun and analyzed. After spinning the sample, the plasma samples are stable for two hour at room temperature. It is recommended to keep samples under 86^oF.

   Currently, the Fibrinogen Test cartridge is only validated for equine. However, validations for additional species are in development.

8. What is the correct tube fill order if a full blood work panel is performed?

   To prevent contamination, always fill sample collection tubes in this order: blue top - sodium citrate anticoagulant for coagulation only; red top - no anticoagulant; green top - lithium heparin anticoagulant for chemistry only; purple top - EDTA anticoagulant - for hematology only. Do not use sodium citrate (blue top) for any samples to be run on a chemistry or hematology analyzer.
